Character
Name: Molly Walker
Series: Heroes
Timeline: 3x01, after being dropped off at the airport (off-screen)

Personality: Molly is the kind of kid you can’t help but fall in love with. She’s a sweet girl, cheerful, curious and affectionate – she’s quick to think the best of people who make a good impression on her and is just as quick to offer these people little tokens, like drawings and hugs. Like most kids she’s inquisitive and likes asking questions about why and how and who, taking an active interest in those she meets and what she comes across. She also frequently displays a sense of humour in that she good-naturedly teases people when she gets the chance, poking light fun at their mannerisms or behaviours to lighten the mood and keep things friendly.

That said, she's remarkably serious for a girl her age (~11). This is largely due to what she’s been through over the course of the show, which is, of course, entirely too much for a kid (but since when in any show are the kids ever allowed to be happy, right). In fact, the very first we see of Molly is as a victim – hiding in fear and thinking “please don’t hurt me” over and over, having just heard both her parents get brutally murdered by the show’s season one Big Bad in the other room. When we meet her again later in canon we see that she is far more than a scared little girl, but there are reasons to talk about her fears too, as they left obvious, lasting impacts on her.

While she remains cheerful and upbeat for the most part, when things get serious around her she quickly understands exactly how serious and seems quite aware of what’s at risk and what she might lose. She’s quite concerned with losses for obvious reasons and doesn’t want anyone else around her to get hurt to the point where she’ll in some ways put herself at risk. It’s not that she’s particularly heroic – she’s just a little kid – but her worry for what might happen to people if she tells them what’s wrong and what she knows outweighs her own sense of discomfort or even suffering.

You might call that selfish to some degree, but it has far more to do with her fear of losing people and her disinclination to talk about what she’s going through. While she is pretty honest for the most part and not afraid to open up and ask and answer questions, when a topic frightens or upsets her, she’ll clam up completely and try to denial it away. When pushed, this is where she sometimes loses her temper, because she does have one – one that lets her shout to be left alone. This isn’t a side to Molly that’s common but she’s not afraid to stand to stand up for herself and she’ll do it with anger if she has to.

Which puts her a bit at odds with herself since she also generally tries to do what she’s told. This likely partially comes from a desire to not drive anyone away (and thus lose them), but mostly from her being a kid who trusts that when people tell her what to do, they have a reason for it. While she’s not uncritical and asks questions and argues, in the end she often gives in if she trusts the other person enough or is won over by reasoning.

She also understandably has some tendencies for black and white thinking, or at least in oversimplifying things – she sometimes speaks of people in labels such as “heroes” and “bad guys”, and calls the man who murdered her parents the “Boogey man”. While it’s not by any means impossible to change her mind, it does mean that she’s more inclined to forgive her “heroes” than the “bad guys” she comes across and will be biased in her approach to them.

Speaking of bad guys, she’s been targeted several times in the show for her valuable ability (finding anyone in the world just by thinking about them). She freezes up when faced with people she knows are dangerous rather than a fight or flight response unless she has someone there she can count on to guide her. She’s scared of people who can hurt her and doesn’t seem to know what to do other than try not to draw attention to herself. She does ask questions and tries to argue in a deleted scene where the season three Big Bad corners her, but that’s when she’s completely alone with him; when she’s unable to hide or rely on other people to show her what to do, she does take a shaky initiative to at least try to understand what’s going on, even if she’s too scared to run or fight back.

That ability of hers has caused her a lot of trouble, but she still seems very fond of it and is eager to use it if it’ll help people. She freely offers to find people for others unless they’re people she’s scared of, and when told to basically lie low, she points out “but I’m not normal” in a tone of voice that asks why she should have to hide because of something she can do. She likes being special and takes a certain amount of pride in her ability, even if she doesn’t think it’s that spectacular. At the same time the endless list of people who want to use her ability and coerce or hurt her to do so make her on edge and cautious, and some ways into canon she gets quite upset when someone she considers a friend seemed to have a greater interest in what she could do than with her as a person.

While her power won’t come into play in game, it shows for how she thinks about it and in some ways herself: she’s proud of what she can achieve but wants people to like and care about her more than anything else about her.

Because she likes and cares about others. She does this pretty obviously, too – she’s easy to read, expressive in that way children often are. She’ll laugh and tease when she’s happy but she’s just as quick to fear, anger or tears. For the most part, she’s bright and curious, if a little cautious. She wants to know what’s going on around her and try to make sure everything’s okay, but like most children she still has a sense of wonder and innocence.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths:
Resilient: Despite having been in danger several times and having seen far too many people die, she manages her day-to-day life with admirable energy, courage and strength. Even in high-stress situations she can crack a smile if something goes well and she can laugh a “Yes!” when asked if she’s fine after having gotten out of a three-day long literal nightmare.

Bright, curious: She likes to ask questions and learn new things, and she takes an active interest in both people and situations, so long as they don’t frighten her. According to her teacher she does well in all her classes. She’s also intuitive and attentive and quite capable of picking up on how people are feeling and other details around her.

Friendly: It’s difficult to not like a kid who’s this cheerful, outgoing and this liberal with smiles and subtle sass. She makes friends quickly and makes sure to try to keep them.

Mature: While not as obvious as the usual cheer, she’s quite mature about a lot of things that happen to and around her. In addition to resignation rather than freaking out about quite-probably dying from a fatal virus, she calls people out on flaws in their logic, hypocrisy and changing subjects on her, and in general doesn't allow them to talk to her like she doesn’t understand. She also displays a lot of sensitivity and tact when relaying to another character that their brother is dead.

Weaknesses:
Traumatised: She’s been through a lot and this takes a toll on her. She at one point suffered from nightmares bad enough to keep her up to the point where she was falling asleep in class, she’s easily frightened and tends to freeze up, and in general isn’t sure how to handle things or people that might harm her. She’s also scared of things or people that remind her of things related to or similar of what she’s been through and doesn’t want to talk about any of it.

Separation anxiety: She’s so scared of losing people or putting them in danger. When not knowing how a person is doing she’ll be worried and want to check up on them a lot even if things are likely to be just fine. There are occasions when she plain won't trust people will be able to take care of themselves, and that can make her pretty clingy.

Sensitive, emotional: Along with being easily spooked, it’s not that difficult to get to her in general. While she does bounce back there are a lot of things for her to be upset about and she can be prone to moments of introspection and the blues - as well as moments of sudden anger and frustration.

Inexperienced: While she’s been through a lot, she’s still a kid. Being on her own will be a new experience, as will roughing it and doing anything that her parents or guardians normally did for her. In the same vein she’s not sure exactly what to expect from the world (especially a strange one) and the people in it. Particularly since the world has been both pretty great and incredibly terrible to her lately.

First Person Sample: Look.

[Hello network. Today we have Molly looking into the camera with a hush-hush whisper, then looking over her shoulder and turning the video around to show her Natu, who is perched on the hotel room desk, staring at ... something. The air?]

[Molly holds the camera on the bird for a moment, then brings it back to herself.]

She's been doing that for ages. Do you think I should stop her? Or maybe it's like sleepwalking and I should leave her alone? [Small moment of consideration,] I've never had a bird before. It would've been easier with a bunny.

Third Person Sample: Most of all, Molly missed her ability. She didn't really mind the strange animals or the other people or the nice little towns, even if she really didn't like being on her own. Actually, most of all she missed Matt and Mohinder, but that's why she missed her ability - because now she couldn't find them and make sure they were okay.

She could see people in her mind when she looked for them. Could see what they were doing. She couldn't find anyone here, not like that ... she reached into herself in that way that reached outwards, and it was like it was empty. It made her feel scared because the last time she hadn't been able to do this she'd been dying. She was pretty sure she wasn't dying but the doubt still scratched at her mind sometimes whenever she tried to find someone or something and she just couldn't.

And she felt scared because she felt alone. Cut off from everything. Again.

On the other hand, she'd always wanted a pet but had never been allowed to have one, and now she could have almost as many as she wanted. Her Natu hopped onto her sketchpad and chirped lightly at her, like she could tell her owner wasn't feeling so good, and Molly smiled and cupped one of her hands over the bird, very carefully stroking her feathers.

"Hi birdy", she said, and laughed when the bird chirped back at her. It was like she really understood her. Someone on the network had said that all these creatures really did. Maybe that's why Molly had been a little hesitant in naming her, because if the bird was that smart, it probably already had a name. She didn't want to give her something that was wrong somehow, or totally different.

Picking up another colored pencil, she started drawing the green bird underneath where she'd been drawing something dark and threatening with big searching eyes. The nightmare man was gone but the nightmares weren't and sometimes drawing them helped. She knew that if she couldn't find anyone here, nobody should be able to find her, either, but she wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not. She really wanted Matt and Mohinder to find her even if she didn't want anyone else to.

Changing the green for black, she drew big circles for her bird's eyes. They were big, too, but not angry and red, just kind of cute and big like a baby animal's. Maybe at some point the Natu manage to see as far as Molly had been able to. That'd be a good thing if she could learn.

She'd have to ask someone on the network if any of these animals could do that.
