Action:

[No no no no no no. No. That's not her mom. That's not her mom, and this isn't the airport, and it's another nightmare, it has to be. What else could it be? It's a dream and it's not her dream and that means she's trapped.]

[Anybody in New Bark will likely catch the sight of a little girl slowly backing away from the house she'd woken up in with wide eyes before breaking into a run and coming to a stop next to some trees to dig through her backpack. Except it's not her own backpack. And the things inside aren't what she wants or needs them to be.]

[Which is a big stressor to a kid who has no idea what to do.]

Audio, later:

Hello? Mr- Parkman? I didn't do anything, I promise.

[Spoken with the urgency of children who want to prove themselves innocent everywhere.]

[Jimmy looks offscreen and pats his knee with a free hand.]

Leader! C'mere boy!

[There's a little shuffle as Jimmy tilts his 'Gear down, revealing a blue and yellow dog seated by his feet.]

This is Leader! He showed up here with me when I first got here, and he's been my pal ever since. Isn't that right?

[He scratches the Manectric behind the ears, earning a friendly lick of his fingers in exchange.]

_{[... whoa! That's ... so very different from any dog, ever, but it's still pretty clear that it's a dog, and that it's a friendly dog, so Molly can't help but smile.]

[And laugh, a little.]}

You named him Leader?

_{[That's so ... doglike. And kind of boylike.]}

He's really cute. Even if he looks weird.

Mhm! Y'see I couldn't really think of a name for him at first...but when I first got here, he pretty much lead the way for me so I wouldn't get lost, aaaall the way to Cherrygrove City. So I figured Leader was a perfect name!

[Coming from the kid who named his Sentret now Furret Cherry after catching her...on the way to Cherrygrove.]

I dunno if anyone's told you yet, but Pokemon have types! So...like Fire, Water, Grass, Electric...all sorts. Most of the time you can tell what type a Pokemon is by how they look, but not always. That's why they kinda look a little weird. So, Leader here is an Electric type!

I bet he likes it.

_{[She's smiling a lot more now. Really, that's a cute story, and it makes sense. And the thing about types also makes an immediate kind of sense to her, and there's a bit of an eagerness in her tone as a result, cause hey, catching on!]}

So he has electric abilities? Like lightning?

Exactly! He's got moves like Thunder, Charge, and Electric Terrain- things that let him control electricity and lightning n'stuff. He's got other moves too, but most of them are electric!

[He pets the top of Leader's head as he explains.]

So your Pokemon will have a type and special abilities too, depending on what it is.

_{[WELL now she's even kind of excited. If her pokémon can do things ... especially now when she can't do things, that sounds like it'd be a big help.]

[And kind of cool.]}

But I don't know where it is. Where did you get Leader from?

Don't know where it is? Hm...well, Leader was with me when I woke up. You woke up in a strange lady's house, right? A lady who was saying she was your mom?

But-

[He reaches down to unclip one of the pokeballs on his belt, holding it out for her to see.]

See this? The Pokemon live in these, pokeballs. If you can't find your Pokemon, it might be in one of these, in your bag.

_{[Definitely a serious look that crosses over her face there at the mention of "mom". But there's an expression of recognition instead when he shows her the ball.]}

Wait, I have one of those! I thought it was a toy ...

_{[or something like that, anyway. Hang on a second while she puts the gear on the ground (enjoy the view of the sky!) and crouches down to get the pokéball out of her backpack. She picks the gear up when she's holding the pokéball in one hand, frowning down at it.]}

How can anything live inside it? It's so small.

I dunno! I still don't really get it either, but I think it's some sort of special technology they have, here.

[He tosses the minimized pokeball once, catching it as it comes back down. It actually reminds him of something Heloise would design...]

But here, I'll show you!

[And with that he presses the button on the ball (which causes it to enlarge and fill his hand to roughly the size of a baseball) before tossing it into the air, turning the 'Gear so she can see.

The pokeball opens in midair with a flash of light, and once the light clears a Furret can be seen standing nearby, her long tail twitching as she sits back on her haunches.]

And if you want to put them back, all you gotta do is point the Pokeball at them with the button facing them, like this.

[Which he does to demonstrate, and just as quickly as she appeared the Furret is gone again, this time in a flash of red.]

Wow!

_{[This terrifying nightmare is maybe not a nightmare after all?? Even if wow, that's plenty alarming, too. How does that even work.]

[Still, there's a very real sense of excitement when she goes to try. She hits the button and then cautiously tosses the ball, not far, but it's off-screen - not that it matters much, cause Jimmy will be treated to her breaking up in a smile and an exclamation, anyway.]}

It's a bird! Look!

_{[Turning the gear around for you friend and there's a Natu fluffing its wings up against the chill, peering up at Molly.]}

There you go, Molly!

[Jimmy exclaims when he sees the little Natu on the screen.]

I recognize that Pokemon from the Pokedex- it's called Natu! It's a Psychic type, too, so that means a lot of the abilities it has will be psychic, and it'll be super strong against Fighting and Poison type pokemon.

I think it might be part flying type, too.

[Since yaknow- bird.]

_{[Some of that information probably gets lost because Molly's putting the gear down again (on her backpack this time) in order to coo at the bird and coax it closer. The Natu, after some hesitation, hops into her hands and Molly carefully brings it up to her chest, cradling it.]

[Then reaches for the gear again.]}

It's so tiny!

_{[And it's psychic! Molly's a little smitten. It's probably obvious.]

[But .... what was this implication about fighting all of a sudden?]}

What do you mean strong? Like if it has to fight them?

Oh, well...I'm guessing you're probably a trainer. Or a breeder, but it all depends on what stuff you got in your bag...but basically it's a normal thing for Pokemon here to fight each other in battles! It's like for sport, yaknow?

It's a little bit hard to explain, but once you do it, I think you'll get the hang of it. You need at least one Pokemon with you all the time, just incase you run into a wild Pokemon.

Are they dangerous?

Well...not usually! Pokemon aren't really interested in hurting people or anything...but they can be. Like, if you wander onto their territory or attack first, they'll protect themselves.

So, you gotta have a Pokemon with you to keep them away. It's not usually much of a problem; plus, if you can weaken a Pokemon you run into and have an empty Pokeball on hand, you can catch it!

Oh, like wild animals.

_{[That makes sense. Everybody knows not to disturb baby animals and stuff cause then their parents will be mad.]}

Should I catch them? Isn't that sort of like kidnapping, too?

Not really! You'd think it'd feel like that...but things work differently here. Pokemon are used to being caught by trainers and they work alongside the people living here. That, and there are a whole lot more Pokemon living in the wild than there are being owned by trainers.

So if you run into a Pokemon you wanna catch, give it a try! It'll be okay, I promise.

[Pokemon are independent from the moment they hatch, too. Mostly. It's easy to tell which ones would rather not be caught just by the way they act, if nothing else.]

_{[She sounds unsure, but she's thinking it over, and she's watching the little bird in her hands that's burrowing into them to seek warmth. And she's kind of won over, honestly.]

[So there's a smile.]}

I always wanted pets. We only had fish for a while.

Yeah? Well, I think you'll like these guys a lot. They're not just any pets, but I think you've figured that much out already.

[Leader growls a little in agreement, pushing his muzzle into his trainer's hand.]

But yaknow, a lot of people don't battle with their Pokemon. Some just aren't suited for it, so they keep them as pets. I've got a dog back home and he actually reminds me of a few Pokemon here...

[But that's, uh.

Because of reasons.]

Well, maybe you'll be able to catch a water type that is a fish!

I don't want a fish! You can't pet them or anything.

_{[She's laughing a little though.]}

And you need to clean the tank and it takes ages.

Don't you miss your dog?

S'lot easier to take care of them here, though! Would you believe me if I told you I have a shark?

[He totally does. ...and it totally nearly bashed him over the head during a hurricane a few months back.

Jimmy pauses for a moment, his smile faltering just a tad.]

Hm?...oh. Yeah, I miss Cerbee a lot. I know my friends are prolly taking good care of him back home, though.

No way! Really?

_{[SHOW HER THE SHARK. This is the face of a kid who demands shark. Slightly apprehensive about shark but DUDE.]}

_{[-- aw about your dog though? Sorry, friend. Molly feels you. Except mostly with people.]}

I hope you get to see him again. If I find a way home I'll tell you about it.

Yeah, really!

[HE WILL TOTALLY SHOW HER THE SHARK he'd just have to take a quick PC trip first. It's lucky because his shark is in those top percentage of sharks that don't want to rip his head off.

At that, he laughs a little under his breath.]

Thanks Molly. Like I said, I'm not too worried about him, so it'll be okay, I think.

[Just as long as someone IS keeping an eye on him. Cerbee can get a little out of hand.]

Someone said time stops back home, did you know that? If that's true I guess you don't really have to worry at all.
