6 ✶ video/action ✶ fourth wall

... did everybody get their powers back?

[A video that's short and sweet and shows cautious excitement, but also a trace of fear.]

It's not another dream, right?

[Action anywhere: Guess who REALLY LIKES HAVING HER POWER BACK? It's Molly. She's gonna be leaning back against a tree with her knees drawn up and her Johto and Kanto map books against her legs, flipping through and marking stuff that follows some kind of logic that's not immediately apparent.]

[That is, when she's not just looking around somewhat anxiously - she's confident she'll find her way back since she can see people again, but she still doesn't like the shifting world all that much. It's unpredictable. She could end up anywhere, and she does; the shifting routes can lead you pretty stray even when you're just trying to get back to Goldenrod.]

Well, of course, you can name a dog whatever you like. Though I've not heard anyone call a dog anything like that before. More often it's "Rover" or "Spot".

[Said with all the authority of a twelve-year-old who's doing his level best at attempting to sound like he knows what's going on, when in reality he's not precisely sure what's going on.]

Do you live here? I think I've gotten a bit lost, and I'll be missed at home if I'm gone too long.

Oh, it's one of those places.

[And all of a sudden it's like the world just fell into place.]

Gosh, what an adventure! I've heard about faraway places like this, but I'd never thought I'd end up seeing one myself! ...Or at least not until I grew a little older, anyway.

[Beat.]

I'm plenty old for it as it is, though.

Oh, I'm sure I'll go back sooner or later. Everyone does, I think.

[He throws her a bright smile.]

You didn't know there are places like this?

[Success. His twelve-year-old sensibilities are pleased as punch at the notion of getting to be an authority on something, even if it's only to one other person and about a topic so outlandish you'd almost think he was kidding.]

Oh, yes, it seems there are all sorts of them. My mother was taken to one once, that's how I know of it.

[HOORAY, HE'S SPECIAL.]

What's the name of your kingdom? You must have one; I wonder if I've heard tell of it before.

Tanalore! That's its name.

[He rocks back and forth on his heels, looking pleased with himself.]

America, that's in the same place that London is, isn't it?

Likely so. That's rather how it is, in places like this. All sorts of people come from all over.

[...]

It's a pity you're not from there! I should have liked to ask if you knew some people.

No, but I've heard tell of them. They're family friends, of a sort; Mother used to know all sorts of people from London.

[He pauses, pondering a minute.]

I suppose you might name off some cities you know of, and I could say if I've heard of any such people in them, just the same.

I don't believe so. Though...I think New York doesn't sound so very strange; is it a popular sort of place to live?

[Given the sincerity in his tone, he's completely serious, which all but confirms that he's Really Not From Around Here.]

Oh, of course. I was going to my tutor's house, in the woods.

[...]

I'm learning magic, I'll have you know.

Bother, I'm sorry, I must've misheard. I thought you asked where I was going before I was here! I ought to pay better attention; my grandfather always says it's important to listen to other people, because you'll almost certainly learn something.

[And apparently someone has taught him to offer an apology when it's warranted. What good manners.]

As for the magic — I can work a few spells, if that's what you mean.

Well, um. Ah! Here, I'll show you.

[He turns eagerly toward his Fennekin, extending his hands and mumbling under his breath.

And it's wobbly and haphazard, but gradually, the fox does indeed begin to float a handful of inches off the ground.]

There, see!

Oh, yes, there are plenty of spells. My uncle can teleport and put people to sleep and understand the language of animals, and my grandfather can turn into a tiger.

[Brag brag brag.]

I think it should be very nice to understand the language of animals in a place like this.

[He lowers the Fennekin back down to the ground, then pushes up his sleeves and waves his hands a second time — this time producing a tiny cloud that begins to shower down a miniature flurry of snowflakes.]
